Waldwick CSA

The Project

Project Overview

The WHS Biology and Economics classes are creating  a sustainable, organic vegetable garden which will serve as a community cooperative, known as a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  The project will prove to be a dynamic and practical learning experience during which students will take on the roles of researchers, designers, creators, business planners, and advocates.  Close connections will be fostered among various academic disciplines as well as with the community at large.  The garden will be an ongoing endeavor empowering Waldwick students to participate in the years to come.

Learning Objectives

·         Students will realize the ecological, health, and economic benefits of a local food system which supplies fresh produce.

·         Students will create and run a working CSA farming cooperative and develop leadership skills.

·         Students will research plants that can thrive in a local garden setting and prepare garden crops for distribution by the CSA.

·         Students will develop models to foster resource conservation and sustainability.

·         Students will value the interdisciplinary nature of the project and realize connections between biology, economics, consumer science, history, sociology, business management/marketing, and technology/information management.

·         Students will recognize the biochemical nature of soils and be able to create an ideal soil profile for an efficient agricultural system.

·         Students and parents will foster positive community ties as they find ways to integrate the garden into the surrounding town.
